Healing with movement

December 01, 20236 min read

“Change happens through movement and movement heals” – Joseph Pilates

What does the word “movement” mean to you? Does it conjure images of someone moving their body? The flowing movement of the river?  Perhaps the movement of the branches and leaves in the wind? Or something else entirely?

What about the movement we can’t see or feel? The movement that is happening within and around us all the time, that perhaps we do not notice?

If we look at movement from the perspective of energy, and with the understanding that everything is energy, then it becomes clear that we, and everything around us (including the entire universe) visible or not, is always moving.

Energy and chakras

It is my belief that Joseph Pilates knew this, and that he understood how energy can be directed to create powerful change, demonstrated through his own healing journey and spiritual practices. But also there are now many energy healing modalities that tap into this wisdom (such as the Energy Alignment Method and Eden Energy Medicine).

I can feel a deeper meaning behind this poplar Joseph Pilates quote, and how it applies far beyond the mere movement of our physical body.  I now look at movement on an energetic level, and for me this encompasses what I see as the four main aspects of each of us:  physical, emotional, mental and spiritual (PEMS ©).

With this understanding then, it becomes clearer as to why an integrated and holistic approach to wellness is necessary for each of us.  As I’ve discovered personally, and with my clients - there is not a one-sized fits all single method that brings all of us to vibrant health.

What can I move and change?

Looking at wellness from an energetic perspective, and knowing that energy can be transformed, we start to get a hints of the enormity of power that’s at our fingertips to not only influence, but completely transform our own wellbeing.

How do you do this?  The key is re-connecting with yourself, tapping into your awareness, and building a ‘selection box’ of tools and techniques that facilitate the change you want to see.

If your wellbeing is out of alignment in any one of these key areas (PEMS©) then it will have a knock-on effect on every area.  For optimum wellness, you need harmony across all four aspects.

So, in terms of what you can change?  Literally anything. It is that simple. Here are just a few areas to get you thinking:

Your: thoughts, beliefs, feelings, emotions from the past and present, physical environment, the energetics in your home, repeating patterns, family conditioning, lifestyle choices, the impacts of past trauma, the work you do in the world, your relationships, your energy systems and structures (such as chakras and aura), attitudes and habits, physical health, the flow of abundance into your life.  And literally anything else you can think of.

 Take a moment to consider:

  • What areas of your life do you want to change?

  • Where do you want to see movement?

  • If one year from now, things could be different, how would they be?

  • How would you feel?

  • What would you be doing?

  • Who would you spend your time with?

  • Where would you be?

  • What challenges would you no longer have?

  • What is something you have ‘put up with’ for a really long time, because everything else you’ve tried, hasn’t worked?

  • What habits would you change?

Just imagine what it would be like if your life were different? I mean really different?

What if you have the power to change it at your fingertips?

Possibility

I say all of this with a deep knowing of what’s possible.  I’ve witnessed it in my life and that of my clients.  The one thing that we have all had in common is the courage to try something new, and the trust to take that first step onto a different path.

My selection box of tools and techniques is quite varied.  Some are conventional, but most are not! I’ve tried so many different things and I continue to practice what has worked for me, leaving the rest behind.  I’m an experimenter at heart but that means I do the experimenting so that you don’t have to!

So, here’s what I continue to practice regularly (and what’s possible for me is possible for you too):

Physical movement:  My personal favourites are Pilates, yoga and dance. Check out this Pilates for Beginners course to get started with Pilates.  For me, this is an amazing and safe way to reduce stress, get out of my head and into my body, and to gently build strength, coordination and flexibility.   https://www.carlithorpe.com/pilatesfoundations and use code LOYALTY10 for a lovely 10% discount!

Mental movement: Using self-reflection through journaling, and the Energy Alignment Method (EAM), I transform limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. Much of what we believe about ourselves and the world is formed within the first seven years of our lives.  Depending on the environment you were in, whether home, school or otherwise, you could be making decisions and choices based on outdated belief systems.

Emotional movement: Using Heartmath tools, physical movement such as shaking and dance, and by practicing self-compassion, I have healed past trauma, navigated deep grief and released trapped emotions.  Through connecting with and opening my heart, I can now healthily experience and process emotions.

Spiritual movement: Tuning up my energy systems and structures and developing a practice that makes me feel connected to something greater than me.  My way of doing this is through EAM, connecting with nature, meditation and guide writing or journaling.

Deep healing is possible

Heart key

This integrated approach facilitated my healing from a life time of depression and anxiety, recovering from a major burnout, overcoming childhood trauma and navigating complex grief.

The beautiful side effect of this journey, is that I finally became my true self – and this side effect has been the greatest gift of all. Through this transformation, I have ultimately unlocked my natural state (and the natural state that is the birthright for us all): wellness, vitality and joy.

The underlying message

I will leave you on this very important and final point: I cannot emphasize enough the immense power you have at your finger-tips to create powerful transformation in your life.

You have the power to return to wellness, vitality and joy.  It’s there inside of you, inviting you to tap into it.  All you have to do is decide that its your time.

That you are ready for change.

That you ready for movement to heal.

If you want to work more deeply on creating change in your life on all levels (physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually), then I can help you with powerful coaching and energy transformation.
